Konica Minolta DiMAGE Scan Dual IV Works In Vista and 7

This page have become hard to read so I start with the important stuff.

KenwortN said... Anyone interested in getting the Minolta Dimage scanner running under Windows 10 then follow the link to the instructions. Use the original Minolta disk where possible and a decent USB cable. All the original software and functions will work perfectly under Windows 10. I am using it on a Toshiba laptop and absolutely no problems.

Latest USB and scsi instructions here.   [Thanx KainAnderson]
Firewire fix in comments.
Minolta original driver.

I finally got my old Konica Minolta DiMAGE Scan Dual 4 to work in vista.
(same solution works in windows 7)

When I first installed the driver and programs from the included CD in Vista, the DS_Dual4 and DS_Dual4Launcher would hang as soon as it tried to find the scanner, and after that first try, it would be completely broken and in need of a restart to even try again.
Back then, I did loads of searching but could not find a solution.

I like this scanner mainly for the easy batch scan utility and for the fact that I have one.
I had saved an old puter with XP, just to run the scanner from, but it became to clunky and I never got around to scan anything.

Recently I found out that it works in VueScan, but I didn't really feel for that program.
So in an attempt to make it work with my included software I tried to apply their "driver".
It works, but not by right click and install, you have to enter properties on the device and browse for disk (sooo windows). Anyway KainAnderson have customized the solution for Minolta, I found it at fixya.com.
I will insert it in the end of this post to make it easier.

If you have lost your CD you can
still download the software from konicaminolta.com
Filip pointed out that the above download no longer work and provided this link mediafire.com.

If you have problems with any other scanner, see if your scanner is listed in VueScan "SCANNERS.INF" file and change the following guide accordingly. Or simply use VueScan software if you like.

1) Install the Konica Minolta XP software in Vista.
2) Plug in your DImage Scanner into a USB port and turn it on with the door closed. It will detect and install the original Konica Minolta Driver.
3) Create an empty folder on you harddrive (for instance go to my computer, double click on the c: drive, then right click and create a new folder named newminolta).
4) Open windows notepad and copy the following into it:
(you find updated info in the comments)

; scanners.inf -- Test Vista Minolta Film Drivers
;
;
; To remove this driver and install the original
; manufacturer's driver, go into Device Manager,
; open Imaging devices, then click on the scanner name
; with the right mouse button and choose Uninstall.

How to make it work in Windows 8

By Richard Lewis:

I’ve now updated to Windows 8 Pro and I’ve got it working.
However it wasn’t straight forward.
Message appeared, “The third-party INF does not contain digital signature information”
Go to Settings
Change PC Settings
General
Advanced Startup > Restart Now
Trouble shoot
Advanced options
Startup options
Restart
Click on ‘Disable driver signature enforcement’
I then had to reinstall from the original disc as there was a message about some “WIA” file needed from the CD. This got it working again.
Hope this helps.

I have read that this works well in Windows 7, even in the 64-bit version.
But I do not run seven myself so I can not confirm it.
Give it a try and let me know.

I have tried several methodes so as you have dicript it , but I have not any succes. Can you tell me how I must handle. For instance I could not copy the files from kladblok to the just made map newminolta.

frisno said...

I'm not sure where the error is at this point, so I'm going to guess.
You may not have administrative rights on the logged on account. Try to create the "newminolta"-folder in your document folder and try to save the file newminolta.inf in that location.
Let me know if/how it works or if there is something that you do not understand, include any or all error messages that pop up when you try so I can get a better idea of what is going wrong.

Huib van der Zon, Yesterday my son has studied the whole matery and found the fold

I'm glad I could help everyone. I was an early adopter of Vista and realized my Dimage IV stopped working so after looking at the driver from Vuescan and the old driver I cobbled together one that worked for Vista. I'm running Windows 7 64 now as well and it still works. Glad to see this spreading around.

I tried loading my Dimage Scan Dual III software into Windows 7 64 bit and it corrupted the Twain driver for my Epson Stylus Photo PXX700W. I have now taken the neg scanner software off and reinstalled the Epson driver. Would the above work for me and would I have to reinstall the Epson driver again?

frisno said...

I'm unable to test, but the procedure to find out would be; to not remove the Dimage Scan Dual III software while reinstalling the Epson driver.
In theory, it would let you keep the Dimage Scan Dual III software, while replacing the damage Twain driver.

Tried installing on Windows 7 64bit system.
Original driver wouldn't load when I initialised the scanner. Scanner was listed as unidentified device in Device Manager.
Installed new driver anyway and "hey presto" scanner now sits in Imaging Devices and works a treat.
The only problem is it's now listed as a Minolta SC-110 in Device Manager.
How do I change that?

frisno said...

Try to comment out the the 2 lines regarding Minolta SC-110 from the inf file and then update the driver or reinstall if needed.
the 2 lines looks like this:

"Minolta SC-110" = USBScanner,USBVid_0638&Pid_0a15

change them to

; "Minolta SC-110" = USBScanner,USBVid_0638&Pid_0a15

frisno said...

@Mike J
I do not know of any way to do that (yet).

Bob Gilston said...

Hi frisno
I successfully loaded your fix on a friends lap top running 64bit Windows 7.
I've now loaded it on to my own computer with the same OS.
When I launch the application, it starts setting up but hangs with the light still blinking. I hear the scanner fire up but nothing else happens.
Any ideas?
I don't understand why I got it to work once but not a second time.
Regards
Bob

frisno said...

@ Bob Gilston
That sounds similar to what happened to me the first time, I had failed attempts lingering in the machine, and the app never recovered even after I change the drivers.
I needed to uninstall the applications AND the drivers, then install drivers with no scanner plugged, before I installed the app.

But

Have a check on post 7 on this page before you change anything

Bob Gilston said...

Well I can't work it out.
I followed the advice given in post 7 - nothing!!!
I uninstalled the software and the device, reinstalled - nothing!!!

Just as I was beginning to think I had corrupted the inf file, I decided to try and load the scanner on to my laptop (also running W7). Bingo, it works.

I will never understand the inner workings of software and computers so I very much appreciate the support of people like yourself.

Thank you for your fix and thank you for taking the time to assist me.

I'd still like some thoughts on how to get the scanner working on my desktop.

frisno said...

It's like me then, I only has a brief understanding how this fix works, i know how to find vid/pid for a device but not how to validate if it works short of testing it. In your case, since you can not reproduce the error (it only faults on one machine), the error may lay in the difference, what is or have been connected to that machine and not to the other.
The scanner waits for a signal from the program. One idea is that for some reason the program fails to send the signal, or are sending the signal to the wrong device.
If this would happen to me I would look for any present or previous device that could interfere with the communication.
If that fails, I would try to see if I could get the scanner to work with VueScan.
How to view hidden devices.

Bob Gilston said...

Eureka!!!!
My computer is an ACER M3910 which has six USB ports at the back and four at the front.
I had been plugging in at the front. I have read somewhere that sometimes the front ports on desktops don't recognise hardware.
I plugged the scanner into a back port and it works fine.

I hope this helps someone else.

Thanks from me too. I haven't tried it yet, but from all the postings, it appears that it will work. I bought my Dimage Scan IV several years ago and only today finally had time to try it out, only to find out that it no longer is supported. Looks like Konica Minolta wants to lose customers.

Rob said...

I'm using Windows 7 64 bit.

After installing your driver The sytems asks for the installing of a WIA-driver.

I stopped the installation to ask you what it means

frisno said...

@ Rob WIA = Windows Image Acquisition enables graphics software to communicate with imaging hardware such as scanners... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Image_Acquisition.

Its an acronym used by windows.
It is not required to install additional drivers, so my guess is that windows was still processing the same .inf but referred to it by the acronym WIA.

I ran across an old SCSI scanner that I needed to get working (the Multi's are great for medium format). Here's a newer driver that should handle all known Minolta film scanners. Not sure how this will look after I post it so hopefully the blog author can format it correctly. If I left out any scanner drivers, use the pid/vid tool to get the ID's and add it to the driver file using one of the other USB or SCSI scanners as an example. Glad I could help.

I followed your instructions and the scanner seems to work... BUT all I get with pre-scan is a black rectangle. Same thing when I scan. I get a file allright, but just a black nothingness.
Any suggestions?

frisno said...

@Haddock try the latest fix from KainAnderson or vuescan, check so that the light still works in the scanner.

@KainAnderson That is great, you just made a lot of people happy :).

Why is these pointers so hard to come by, I mean, the driver are already in windows. There should be a long listing somewhere, Like this but complete and from Microsoft.

KainAnderson said...

I have no idea. I've also been looking at trying to enable some of the firewire ones. Vuescan doesn't support any of the firewire port versions (I don't think) but I don't have one that is dual SCSI and firewire. If anyone has one and wants to be a guinea pig, I can try to create an inf file for firewire as well. Also, these all link back to the standard imaging .inf file used for TWAIN. WIA requires someone to actually rewrite the Minolta app into WIA to work so no go there because I don't have access to the source code for the Minolta apps. For Adobe CS5 users, you need to add the TWAIN plugin to allow it to use TWAIN drivers.

@Haddock - It sounds like the bulb blew on your scanner. Keep in mind all this .inf file does is allow the Minolta TWAIN app to find the scanner. For the Dimage IV it works perfectly in Win 7 64-bit and I imagine others will as well, but there is the chance that the Minolta app has bugs and will not work in Win 7 for other scanner versions. In those cases you may want to try the vuescan or silverfast demo to see if it works. If they do, try setting compatability modes on the Minolta TWAIN app to Win95 or XP and see if that helps.

I picked up a Dimage Scan Elite 5400 off craigslist for dirt cheap. Here's an updated driver that has firewire support for just the elite 5400 mk 1. The catch is you have to update your windows 7 driver for the 1394 bus to legacy (see here: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itprohardware/thread/65cb7a25-2a84-4875-aa27-b084537e8da1/). Kain,

Regarding the firewire issue, I have some information that may be of interest. My Minolta Scan Elite II is firewire/usb. As expected, your custom driver works perfectly when connected with USB, but not with firewire (I manually installed the driver when connected each way).

Now the odd thing in all of this is that it does work with firewire in Vuescan using the Vuescan driver (but not with the Minolta software). I'm not sure why this is, though, as there's no listing in the Vuescan scanners.inf file for the Minolta scanner under the SPB2 (firewire) headings, only under USB.

So there must be a way to cobble together a firewire driver, I'm just not sure how. If you have any ideas, I'd be willing to test it.

@Tom - Yes, it should be fairly easy to do. Go under my file under the sections [Models] and [Models.ntamd64] and add this item:

“Minolta Scan Elite II Firewire” = SBP2Scanner,SBP2\??????????CmdSetId104d8

To figure out what to put where the ? marks are, open the unknown device in device manager and go to properties. Then select the details tab. Then select "hardware ids" for property and the value will show SBP2\blah-blah-blah. Copy that into the string above and put it into both the sections I mentioned and it should install.

kainanderson said...

@Tom - Oh...and if you get it working, please post the updated driver file. We can keep it current as more people find models I forgot to add. If you can't figure it out, just get me the SBP2 string from device manager for your scanner and I'll remake the driver.

Just found this thread. Can one of the experts recap the install procedures from zero? I have a Dimage Scan Dual IV with original install disks and win 7 64 bit. Do I need to install anything from the orginal install disks, or can I just use the driver file provided by Kain Anderson and nothing else?

Thanks.

frisno said...

Perhaps we can get a comment from someone with windows 7, I can only say how I do it on vista.
First I must add that I like the included software, in particular the batch function so I plug in the scanner and install everything like normal. This however will not make the scanner work, so I then find the scanner in 'Device Manager' where I replace (update) the driver with the file from Kain.
That reminds me, the 'Scan button' on the scanner do not work for me. Have any one got that to function properly?

I am on Windows 7 and am pulling my hair over this one. I tried installing the driver provided here, I tried using the Vuescan drivers, but no luck. When the scanner us connected and powered up, Vuescan hangs upon loading, and I wasn't able to get the Minolta software to start up.
I even tried connecting it to a Windows XP running in Vmware with no luck.
Usually, I fiddle with problems like this for a few hours and then I get it to work, but this is a tough one and I'm at a loss.
Any advice, guys?

Frisno said...

It should not take many minutes (if all works as intended).
When I have the non working (original/default) driver; I can still get Minoltas program to start, but it will hang as soon it tries to communicate with the scanner. Vuescan should not give you any hiccups if it is the last thing installed.
It makes me think that the scanner are still referring to a faulty driver.
Try to unistall the scanner then unplug it, unistall Vuescan, restart the puter.
Install Vuescan again and try to get the scanner to work that way.
With only Vuescan as a goal you limit the number of possible variations that can go wrong.
If you get that to work, there should be no problem switching driver and use Minoltas application. Doing so should not stop Vuescan from working.

Filip said...

I got it to work almost miraculously-so far I fiddled with it only on my desktop, which was pretty messed up driver-wise after installing various versions of the modded Minolta drivers and even the Vuescan drivers.

So I took my laptop, installed Vuescan with drivers and nothing else, no Minolta drivers, and connected the scanner. It got recognized and then I started Vuescan. The scanner started whirring and making various sorts of sounds(which it hasn't ever done before, Vuescan would always hang at the splashscreen and the scanner would remain silent) and Vuescan started and worked.

So I uninstalled everything Minolta-related from my desktop as well(in a same way as I've done it the 6 times before), rebooted, installed only Vuescan and connected the scanner. Now it works flawlessly. I no longer believe that computers behave logically and hencce, I will always stroke the scanner's imaginary hair before I use it.

Anyway, thanks for a great guide and as I also noticed that the Konica Minolta site no longer works, I've uploaded the drivers here:

Hi, installed Kains driver in Win7 64 and it works!!!!! as a standalone application. Tried to make it work from within CS5, downloaded the Twain driver from Adobe, installed it in CS5 32 bit version, and it appears in the import menu perfectly. When clicked it actually looks fro the scanner and finds it as the scanner reacts making boot noises, it warms up still with the welcome screen and suddenly says Error=21
File cannot be opened
If you press the Accept button it reads:
Could not complete the import command because there is no scanner installed.

Do you know how to fix this issue? It would be great to scan and have the picture inside PS, if not, saving it as TIF in the standalone and then reopening in PS is OK.
Thanks in advance.

I installed your driver, but it is not working.
When I cheked the driver, I see usbsys.sys
But just in a short time a second driver appears KSTHUNK.sys

I think this driver is the cause of the problem.
Can you advise me, I don't know what KSTHUNK.sys is, where it comes from and how I can remove it.

Rob said...

Sorrie usbsys.sys must be usbscan.sys of something like that.
I checked this driver and it has the same date then yours, so I think it's yours

frisno said...

Hi Rob

Do not poke ksthunk.sys, this is needed for imaging devices.
Lets preform a short run-through of the instructions:
Rhight-click this and save as newminolta.inf (remove .txt from suggested name).
Save it in C:\newminolta\ (choose replace if another file already exist) and then update the driver with this new file.
Allow installation of  WIA  if it asks you (Windows Image Acquisition).

The driver should now display usbscan.sys again and it should stick.
Lets see how that goes first and let me know.

Max said...

Hi,

just bought a Minolta Scan Dual IV but can't get it to work on my Win7 64bit laptop. I installed the driver as you described it and in the device manager the scanner is listed without problems. But if I try to start the Minolta Easy Scan software starts his initialisation procedure but then simply stopps and the program doesn't react. Same thing happens if I start vuescan and the same thing happens if I try to use the vuescan driver! I already used the Minolta with XP and it worked like a charme!
Do you have any suggestions?
Thanks,
Max

frisno said...

Hi max

Read these previous comments, it may be of same nature...

Max said...

Thanks, I tried everything you suggested but nothing changed. I even tried to use the vuescan driver again but still the same problem. With vuescan and your driver mod the driver seems to be installed correctly but if I start one of the scanning programs the startup simply freezes and nothing happens. As you mentioned earlier, it might be a communication problem. Do you have any suggestions how to check this out?
Thanks,
Max

frisno said...

Is even Vuescan scanning software freezing up on you?

If not then I can't think of anything except: are you really really super duper sure you managed to remove everything related to the scanning software and the "original" drivers before the last restart prior installing the scan software again.

If even Vuescan freeze, there may be some characters wrong in the .ini, trailing spaces perhaps.

Keep us updated.

I just launched without powering up my scanner and at that level of communication error I get a message saying "Error=4 Could not confirm scanner connection...

Max said...

Yes Vuescan freezes as well as the original Minolta software. I'll just try to remove everything and install it again.
What I don't understand is that vuescan and the minolta software freeze. What could be the reason for this?

frisno said...

I do not know.
What version of Minolta software do you have, Mine says 1.0.2.0 in file properties.

p.s
I can say that if it would happen to me I would do a windows restore to an earlier point and only run Vuescan, the wizard should guide you to a working setup. With that approach any minolta-software and fixes are ruled out of the equation.
If that works I would save a new restore-point and try the minolta.ini in device manager.
If that works I would install the Minolta software but no drivers, re-do the minolta.ini and Then try Minoltas software.

Max said...

Same problems with vuescan... the Minolta simply doesn't work. No matter what I try and what software I use the scanner freezes during startup.
Any other suggestions?

frisno said...

Try this tool to see if the scanner is identified correctly.
Also I would suggest that you find a way to test it on a 2k or Xp to verify that it ain't broken, remeber to test the usb cable as well.

Max said...

Already tried it on XP and it works without problem... usbview says everything is in order.

frisno said...

What values did USB View report on: 'IDvendor' & 'IDproduct'
Also check how many entries you have under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB\VID_132B&PID_000A in your registry

Max said...

THe new vuescan version fixed my problems and everything works perfectly! Anyway, thanks for your help!

Rob said...

I installed your driver as adviced by you 10 june.
The istallation is ok, i checked the date of your routine, that equal to the date of the current driver.
When installing the driver I had to choose a model (this was new) i choose Dimage dual IV. ksthunk.sys apeared again.

The problems stay the same.
The Dimage dual IV makes some noise (twice) and nothing happens.

I did reboot try again and again, start the program in administrator mode/ XP sp3 and so.

Still the program doesn't works and gives a time out error

with regards Rob

Hi Guys,

I cam across this site while trying to get my DiMage Scan Elite 5400 to work firstly on OSX and then on Vista. The unit is second hand and I can load 35mm tray and scan 1-6 but all I get is a full frame of coloured noise, no photo image at all.

This is driving me nuts. Is this a problem with the drivers you are all discussing or have I got a damaged DiMage?

Any help could put me out of my misery ;o(

Thanks

Nick

frisno said...

This driver is to enable the scanner in vista & windows7, and since you can scan, I assume you have XP or older. This driver would, if you upgrade to Vista or later, only enable you to receive full frame noise there to.
Check what driver that is loaded for your scanner and run this tool to see what VID & PID your scanner present it self with.

Nick said...

Hi Frisno,

Thanks for the very speedy reply. Yes the PC is XP and I can get the scanner up with Minolta Dimagescanner utility or Vuscan. But when I scan each frame simply comes out with a block of coloured pixels 'snow'.

This is doing the same on Mac OSX in Firewire and USB. So I think the driver is loaded?

But does the patterend scan mean the lamp of scanner is blown?

If this is still something I can sort with a fiddle with the drivers then I will persevere.

I just though with everyone using this scanner on here someone may have had the same scan default.

Thanks for the link which I tried on my PC but I cannot work out what I am looking for? I am mainly a MAC guy ;o)

Cheers

Nick

frisno said...

When it's the same on both platforms you are right to assume its the scanner. The light from the lamp in the scanner is visible from the outside in a normal lit room, but other then that we have to hope that there are any of our readers who recognise this behaviour and can tell what have failed.

Kain Anderson said...

I spent the whole day yesterday scanning with the above driver and it appears to work well with USB, though I'm having trouble with firewire (was with the old drivers as well) so not sure what the deal is (the Win 7 firewire drivers are flakey anyway). I don't see any new features that are enabled, and the quick scan button still doesn't work for me. Maybe when I get some time I'll look, but since I really don't use that button it's not a big deal. The colors for the Dimage scan utility are still way off (too red). I've found that scanning to linear and then fixing using Vuescan seems to be the best workflow for me. I have Vuescan set for source file and the color set for white balance (which gives a blue tint), and then select filter "restore fading" which brings it back to neutral. Curve low is set for .25 and curve high is set for .001 which snaps the contrast to where one would expect it.

I,m having a new pc with a clean Windows 7 x64 version (Dutch). I have never installed before minolta dimagescan III or any driver belonging to this. I don't have Vuescan either.

1) Is it possible to get the dimagescan III working on my PC with only the original Minolta software?
2) Wich steps do i have to take in order to get this working?

Kain Anderson said...

Camiel,

1) Install the original Dimage III software (konica eu website I believe).
2) Look in c:\windows\inf for the dimage driver file. The newer ones are dsXXXX.inf where the X's are numbers. It will look similar to what I posted above if you open it in notepad.
3) Make the additions I described above.
4) Save the file.
5) Redetect the scanner (turn off and on).

Camiel said...

Thanks, Kain
I'll give it a try.

Camiel said...

I received the new driver from someone who had the same problem earlier, and it works perfectly now, both with the easy utility and with the regular program. So, again Kain, thanks for your help.

Hi Frisno,

Just to let you know that I left the scanner a couple of weeks, connected back to my Mac OSX machine with Silverlight AI and the first frame scanned fine in colour. Before I was getting a whole scan of noise.

So with that able to scan and the light visible inside the unit I am sure it is all working.

My main reason for getting a scan first time was that I swapped out the USB lead for a new one.

Only thing is, after trying to get a high res scan off the preview the 5400 went back to scanning noise.

I am now getting black squares as preview scans, is there anyone who can help?

I don't think the unit is broken, just the software or USB is faulty to allow the scan to comje through onscreen properly

You're a savior!!! My Scan Dual IV now works like a charm on Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.

Couple things...
1. I didn't see the scanner listen under "Imaging Devices" in step 9. After a frustrating bout of reinstalling etc, I realized it was initially under "Other Devices". I updated the driver as described in steps 3-14, and it showed up under "Imaging Devices".

2. I had a .inf from a previous search many months ago, and the difference compared to the one you list in step 4 was that in the entries in the [Models] and [Models.ntamd64] sections there was a "\" between "USB" and "Vid_xxxxxxx". For example, my .inf had:
"Minolta Scan Dual IV" = USBScanner,USB\Vid_132b&Pid_000a
versus the following in step 4:
"Minolta Scan Dual IV" = USBScanner,USBVid_132b&Pid_000a
I used the version with the "\" in the middle as it seemed "more right". Not sure if this is significant.

Again, THANK YOU both to you and others who have provided instructions to make this work!

I have changed the step and added some missing slashes.

I don't think there is anything to fix, afaik Minolta never made any Software or drivers for linux.

But I guess you can emulate the software with wine or something, or revert to virtualbox

However, I think you should try XSane Image Scanner (Applications → Graphics → XSane Image Scanner) before complicating things. Who knows, maybe you like it, it can do batch scanning.

If your device manager will not show you the scanner or a 'unknown device' you can add it manually by right clicking the top most icon (it has the computers name) in the device manager.
Choose 'add legacy hardware'
next
'manually'
next
'imaging devices'
next
'have disk' and then you are at step 12 in Latest 'USB and scsi instructions'

I like the dual IV and mechanically it's in good cond. It's well-made with lots of features - and - it's paid for! I also learned alot more about device drivers and feel comfortable (tho not expert) at being able to load a workable driver for a device.
Thanks again!

My 70-year old mother, who just migrated her old XP desktop to a brand new Win7 laptop (well, I did it for her ;) - and who has like 50 years of slides to convert, is so immensely happy with what you guys worked for her!! Thanks a bundle from Vlaardingen the Netherlands!!!

You Rock !! I was just given a DiMAGE Scan Dual IV scanner, and am now able to use it. I am using Windows 7.0 ultimate OS, 64 bit. I installed the software download, and restarted the computer as instructed. Received an error stating the driver wasn't installed. I then updated the driver following the instructions above. Problem solved!! It works great.

THANK-YOU from AZ!! I've had my scanner forever and just realized it was outdated with no current drivers-- thanks for the help!

I have a DImage Scan Dual III and it seems to work, the Easy Scan program seems to work, but when it scans the image is just black. I am figuring the bulb might have blown? Is there any way to replace or is it just destined for the trash?

This was awesome. Thanks

Hello,

I have a similar but somewhat different issue. I'm trying to revive a Scan Multi 2.
This was originally a scsi device, and I am using a Ratoc Systems FR1SX to "convert" it to a Firewire device.

Imagine my surprise today when I tried to launch the DS Multi software on my Win XP machine and it found it and I was able to scan!!

So of course, needing to push my luck, I figured maybe I can do the same on Win 7 (Pro 64B). Currently have it working with VueScan, but I don't really get along with it at this point)

I had already found your driver, and thought to "tweak it" for the firewire, but then realised that even though Vuescan used to recommend the FR1SX for the Scan Multi, (now they recommend the USB equivalent), there's no information in the scanners.inf file that comes with vuescan about the Firewire adapter for this, and it works.

So,... am I correct in believing that this is "transparent" to Vuescan and to the DS Multi software? If Yes, a little guidance would be very appreciated. For vuescan, after many many minutes of waiting for calibration and such, I can get a scan.

With the DS Multi software, I get the Error #4 Check Scanner Connection. I'd really like to use this software if it's at all possible.

Hardware IDS are as follows:
SBP2\RATOC_Systems_Inc.&IEEE1394_-_SCSI-3&CmdSetId104D8&GenScanner
SBP2\RATOC_Systems_Inc.&IEEE1394_-_SCSI-3&CmdSetId104D8
SBP2\RATOC_Systems_Inc.&IEEE1394_-_SCSI-3&LUN6&REV36
SBP2\RATOC_Systems_Inc.&IEEE1394_-_SCSI-3&LUN6
SBP2\GenScanner
GenScanner

It seems to fall under generic. I do not think it is transparent, but firewire is handled as scsi by sti.inf so... not sure, its a bit of a mystery to me.

Try any or both of these lines (just winging it).
Put them last in both 32 and 64 portion.

"RATOC Systems Inc" = SBP2Scanner,SBP2\RATOC_Systems_Inc&CmdSetId104D8
"Firewire Scanner" = SBP2Scanner,SBP2\GenScanner

Try it in a dark room, you should see the light from the scanner. I do not know what light source they use, perhaps it is a common one? Hope some one can tell.

Well, in the end, the scanner works without tweaking the driver. I managed to get it working with some combination of the legacy firewire setting, setting the compatibility mode to XP SP3, and giving all users administrative rights.

My scanner is (from what I can tell in a short test) fully functional under Win7. Thanks so much in part to your and Kain's help.

I'm not sure if it's white or black magic that made it work, I'm just really happy to have my scanner back from the dead!!

Dear Frisno,
Just want to say: "thank you so much" as my dual 3 works indeed in windows 7.

I'm running win7 - 64bits and installed yr driver as advised. In principle it works, however my machine hung a few times. What I did now is installing the original Minolta programmes and replaces the driver by the Vuescan driver.
It now works very smoothly and without the VueScan watermark.

Thank you!!! Thank you!!! Thank you!!! My Scan Dual IV works like a charm. I thought I would have to buy a new one. You saved me money, time, and aggravation.

You're a life saver. For some reason, I had no trouble installing a Dual III on my Win 7 machine at work, but no go on my home Dual III/Win 7 machine. Your solution did the trick. Many, many thanks!

Another VERY happy Dual ScanIV owner! A few glitches on the way but all the answers were here. Just off to buy another USB cable so my Canon Lide can have it back, then find out how not to have to Run as adminstrator every time.
My thanks to everyone who has contibuted to this, especially Kain Anderson & Frisno for looking after us.

I tried this out on my laptop running Vista as a test before committing to upgrade my PC from XP to 7. It worked perfectly with my Dimage Scan Dual IV.
Many thanks.

Hi.

I've joined this forum to follow this post and ask for some advice.

I have a Minolta Dimage Elite F-2900 which is a SCSI film scanner. Im using an adaptec USB2xchange adapter to connect it to my Vista laptop via USB.

Using Vuescan, all works fine. But I'm frustrated that the original Minolta software does not work.

The software is rather old so I built a virtualPC runnig windows 98 (no easy task!) but virtual PC doesnt seem to recognise the adapater.

Using the .inf file above, with vuescan uninstalled , the laptop completely recognises the adapter and scanner (fantastic). But the original Minolta software says"Error=5, Could not confirm scanner connection. Please verify scanners connection and SCSI ID#"
The scanner is on! The SCSI ID is 0, and SCSI terminator is ON.
Any ideas what to do? Im reluctant to buy Vuescan because of handing over my credit card details to a non-retailer.

frisno said...

Last thing first, always have a one time credit card number generated for online purchases.
If you have vuescan on your system (trial or not) you can point to the scanners.inf file from hamrick.
Your scanning program seems to look for a SCSI and since you have converted your SCSI to a USB there are no SCSI present.
I'm thinking you need a virtual SCSI interface to communicate with your software, something that may be present in virtualization environments.
Other then that, I'm wondering if a newer/different version of Minolta software may work and still provide you the same UI experience.

Frisno your a star! Installed my original Minolta Dimage Scan Dual 1V software on my windows 7/64 bit laptop. Updated the driver with yours as above and guess what! "miracles do happen" the scanner works. Thank you so much for the fix. I have one request if I may, if any one has a spare FH - U2 film holder they would like to sell or could advise me where to get one I would appreciate it. my email address is revill.t@ntlworld.com.

Your explanation and solution worked like a charm. Thank you for taking the time and trouble to post it on the Internet for poor suckers like me. I am running Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit with Windows 7 running in a Virtualbox VM and I have a Konica-Minolta DiMage Scan Dual IV. I pointed the Win-7 Device Manager at the original K-M Installation CD several times, but it consistently failed to install the drivers. I found your instructions, followed them to the letter, and voila! My scanner fired-up on the first attempt. You have made a significant deposit to your karmic bank account.
